"What Do Scientists Think of Science Coverage in the Media?" That was the headline of a recent article in HowStuffWorks, which took a closer look at how the media covers research.
A few highlights:
- As John says in his speeches and book, people who like grilled cheese sandwiches probably don't have more sex, despite media reports.
- Sometimes it's not the media's fault that stories are misleading. Maybe the original study isn't good. Unless you're an expert, it's hard to know.
- Most research involves incremental progress. Rarely do you get those "wow" moments - but that's what many people (and journalists) are looking for.
